It is anticipated that an approaching storm system will bring severe freezing weather, snow, and ice, which will have an impact on a significant portion of the southern region of the state.
In preparation for this storm system, approximately 400 members of the Alabama National Guard (ALNG) are being activated.
These individuals will be providing assistance to local responders in the management of the effects of the severe weather in response to the conditions that are expected to occur. In addition to working closely with other organizations, such as the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT), the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA), and local services, the Alabama National Guard will direct its operations under the leadership of the Alabama Emergency Management Agency (AEMA).
Through the formation of this cooperation, a coordinated response to the challenges that are posed by the winter weather will be ensured.
In order to carry out the activation, the ALNG mobilized seven of its multi-functional Mobility Support Teams (MSTs) on Sunday.
These MSTs were stationed at regional sites ranging from Birmingham to Mobile. There are similarities between these teams and the personnel that were activated a little more than a week ago to assist with the state’s response to the winter weather.
At that time, 350 members of the ALNG offered essential support. The Mobile Support Teams (MSTs) are highly specialized groups that are able to tackle a wide variety of important activities in the event of severe weather.
They are prepared to fulfill a variety of essential responsibilities, including route reconnaissance, clearing right of ways, carrying essential resources, conducting search and rescue operations, and other essential tasks.
It has been underlined by the ALNG that the MSTs are adaptable and capable of fast adjusting to different circumstances. It is possible for the teams to rapidly grow, downsize, or adapt their activities in order to meet the requirements of the emergency scenario.
This is possible in the event that the situation changes or additional support is required. In order to ensure that local responders have the support they require to address the repercussions of the storm and to keep communities safe, the units are ready to respond to a variety of duties.
