Chelsea officials believe Christopher Nkunku can ‘play as No. 9’ and may not sign the striker this summer, according to reports.
Fabrizio Romano reported last December that Nkunku’s move to Chelsea was “signed and sealed” for this summer. He added that the German international will “start” in the Premier League “from July 2023”.
The £53m transfer was later confirmed by RB Leipzig manager Max Hébert. “Unfortunately, in the case of Christopher Nkunku, the situation at Chelsea FC is very clear.”
The 25-year-old has been in great form at RB Leipzig this season. He has scored 22 goals and eight assists in 35 appearances in all competitions.
Nkunku is often used as a second striker this season, but he can also play on both sides.
Mauricio Pochettino was announced as the new Chelsea manager on Monday afternoon. And one of his priorities will be finding a way to end the predicament in front of goal. In the 22/23 season, the Blues scored just 38 goals in 38 Premier League games.
report from Guardian Chelsea claim they are ‘interested’ in Napoli’s Victor Osimhen and Inter Milan’s Lautaro Martinez.
However, Chelsea are said to be “determined not to panic” and feel that Nukunku is one solution to their goal-scoring woes.
“One of Pochettino’s main tasks will be to improve the team’s ruthlessness. Chelsea, who have scored 38 goals in the league this season, have seen Napoli striker Victor Osimhen and Internazionale forward Lautaro. Interested in Martinez, Pochettino will need to consider what to do with Romelu Lukaku when the striker’s loan at Inter ends.
But Chelsea is determined not to panic in the search. They believe Christopher Nukunku, who is due to join from RB Leipzig, can play as No.9.
“Some see teams succeeding through shared goals. Brighton have scored 72 league goals this season, but only one player has scored in double figures.
“Chelsea will not repeat the exuberant spending of the last two windows.”
