On Sunday, members of the Teamsters union who are employed at Costco Wholesale facilities around the country exercised their right to vote on whether or not to approve a strike. More than 85 percent of members voted in favor of going on strike.
A total of more than 18,000 Costco employees around the country are represented by the union.
“Our members have spoken loud and clear — Costco must deliver a fair contract, or they’ll be held accountable,” Teamsters General President Sean M. O’Brien stated in a press release.
“From day one, we’ve told Costco that our members won’t work a day past January 31 without a historic, industry-leading agreement. Costco’s greedy executives have less than two weeks to do the right thing. If they refuse, they’ll have no one to blame but themselves when our members go on strike.”
The labor union has indicated that the demand for “fair wages and benefits” for workers is the key impetus for the impending strike that is scheduled to take place. It has been claimed by union officials that the wholesale behemoth Costco recently recorded an astounding yearly sales of $254 billion, in addition to a net profit of $7.4 billion.
The discrepancy between the expanding wealth of the corporation and the worries of its employees regarding remuneration and benefits is further highlighted by this financial performance, which marks an astounding 135% growth in earnings since 2018.
In light of the fact that Costco has achieved record earnings, the union maintains that it is of the utmost importance for the firm to guarantee that its workers are provided with equitable treatment in terms of pay and benefits that are commensurate with the level of success that the company has achieved.

“Yet, despite these record gains, the company refuses to meet the Teamsters’ demands for fair wages and benefits that reflect the company’s enormous success,” according to the union.
Beginning in Hayward, California, and extending all the way to Sumner, Washington, and Long Island, New York, hundreds of Costco Teamsters across the country staged practice pickets in preparation for the strike that will take place this week.
“We are the backbone of Costco,” Bryan Fields, a worker at Costco in Baltimore who is also a member of Teamsters Local 570, said in the news release.
