Morocco has made great strides in improving opportunities for women in the labor market. This includes the adoption of many laws and policies aimed at promoting gender equality and women’s participation in the labor market. These laws relate to equal pay, protect the rights of working mothers and encourage women’s participation in the private sector. Additionally, the government has developed programs to provide counseling and training to women to encourage their participation. These efforts contributed to Morocco’s score of 75.6 out of 100 in providing a welcoming business and legal environment that enables equal opportunities for women in the labor market. These measures have allowed the North African country to improve its standing relative to other countries in the region, but much remains to be done to achieve gender equality.
The World Bank has released a report showing Morocco as the North African country with the best business and legal environment for women. The country scored 75.6 out of 100. This means that there are favorable legal and business terms that give women equal opportunities.
According to a World Bank (WB) report, Morocco scored 70.1 on the Human Development Index (HDI)., Tunisia (64.4), Algeria (57.5) and Egypt (50.6), among others in the region. This shows that Morocco has achieved a higher level of human development than other countries.
The publication Women, Business and the Law 2023 reviews the laws of 190 countries and examines how property rights, investment, and access to finance affect women’s entrepreneurial and managerial abilities. The results show that countries with better designed laws have higher proportions of female entrepreneurs. In addition, legislation under the 2023 Act has contributed to closing the gender gap in land ownership in many countries. The study concludes by recommending that governments around the world modernize their laws and continue to implement judicial systems that recognize women’s right to own, invest, and finance.
The scores assigned to countries reflect laws that affect women in eight key areas. These include mobility, workplace, salary, marriage, childbirth, entrepreneurship, wealth and pensions. These scores help assess the level of gender equality in different countries around the world.
Morocco has achieved full gender equality in mobility, workplace and entrepreneurship laws, scoring 100 in all three areas. However, the country scored lower on the remaining four indicators covering salaries, marriage, wealth, pensions and parenting. These scores were 50, 60, 40, 40, 75, and 80 respectively.
Despite Morocco’s progress on gender equality, the World Bank notes that the MENA region still ranks lowest in the world in terms of gender equality, with an average country score of just 53 out of 100. I’m here.
