HARRISON COUNTY, Texas (KETK) – A man was arrested Sunday after he chased him through multiple counties on Interstate 20 through Smith and Greg counties before ending in Harrison County.
Officials said the Harrison County dispatch reportedly said multiple units from the Texas Park Police Department, Smith County, were in pursuit on Interstate 20 and headed for Harrison County.
“The unit temporarily lost track of the vehicle in Gregg County,” an official said. “Harrison County legislators and his DPS unit in Greg County have launched a chase in Harrison County.”
Officials said the driver, later identified as Thomas Payne, a 24-year-old from Shreveport, Louisiana, continued his getaway in a gray Honda Accord, exiting I-20 onto FM 968, where he was killed. The car crashed into a wooded area near Hut Houghton.
After the car crashed, authorities said Payne fled with a handgun and was arrested after a short chase.
Payne was arrested by Texas Parks and Wildlife for arrest evasion, resisting arrest, reckless driving, illegal possession of a weapon, possession of controlled substances, and possession of marijuana.
The Harrison County Sheriff said, “I have always been proud of legislators who deal with dangerous situations and people in a professional way every day.”
