GARNER, N.C. (WNCN) — Two of the three lanes of westbound US 70 were closed for much of the afternoon after a fatal crash near Garner Friday afternoon.
State trooper JT Mangum, who was present at the scene, said the accident occurred just before 2pm on the highway near Rainer Road on the way east.
Mangum said the crash was caused by the Toyota Camry driver not giving way when crossing US 70 on Walnut Drive. The driver, whom he identified as a woman in her 80s, died in the impact when a white pickup truck heading west collided with her car.
The truck driver was taken to a nearby hospital, but his injuries are not life-threatening.
As of 4:30 p.m., a trooper and tow truck remain at the scene, awaiting the coroner.
Traffic slowly reopened in all lanes. Drivers traveling within the area must follow the instructions of on-site staff.
